Sunday 12th April

My feature artist on this beautiful sunny easter Sunday was Rae Howell, who started up Sunwrae Ensemble about eight years ago. They're about to embark on an 18 date tour of the country, having just released their third album Autumn Never Fall. Sunwrae create live performances with a difference – not only is it a fantastic auditory experience but the visuals have a little something extra. Joining the group are visual artists who create works during the performance. It’s a beautiful experience and I can't wait to head along to the Thornbury Theatre to see them do their thing again on Thursday 4th of June.

We're back!

Local and Vocal is back on board for the Autumn Grid, Sundays 1 - 3 pm. I'm pretty stoked about that.

Today's triumphant return happened to fall on International Women's Day (other wise known as happy birthday Angie Hart day), so there was a big focus on the ladies. I might play all dudes next week in the second hour, just to ensure I remain an equal opportunity radio program.

I had a chat on the phone with fab Sydney lady Sarah Aubrey, who you may know for many reasons:

  • her band Girl Most Likely
  • she was featured in a Tropfest short film about her doing a poo, and won best actress at Tropfest for this in 2002
  • the girl in the Silverchair video for Ana's Song
Sarah is in a band with her girlfriend Beck (drums), neighbour Chris and friend Scott. They're grouse! Check them out.

In the second half of the program the happiest lady I've ever met popped in to have a chat and a play, Coby Grant is launching her EP Coby Grant Is In Full Colour at the Northcote Social Club tonight in the middle of her national tour. We played BAM and Coby played A Song About Me (which was not about me, but about her) live in the studio. It was so lovely and affirming that I almost floated away but I did force myself to stick around and press the buttons til the end of the show.

MUSIC LOG
Girl Most Likely - Black Eyes
Girl Most Likely - England

Angie Hart - Kiwi
Don't Mess With The Pony - It's You I Love
Rosie Burgess - Skin & Bone

Anita George - The Lost
Abbie Cardwell - Can't You Hear Me Knocking (Rolling Stones cover)

NEXT WEEK
Abbie Cardwell will be feature artist for the whole first hour. Looking forward to THAT one! She's handy on the banjo, and also DJs around Melbourne from time to time.

CURRENT MUSIC OBSESSION
Cat Power is where it's at for me at the moment. Her and Feist. Hells yeah.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO
Shaving my head for the World's Greatest Shave next weekend, to raise money for the Leukaemia foundation. I need more donations! If you'd like to sponsor me check this out :

I can't wait to see Mia Dyson and Jen Cloher play at the Athenaeum next Saturday night.

It's good to be back. I feel happy inside.

Hey if you're interested in hearing some ye olde L&V, head to iTunes and download the podcast! Vivan Vo has been doing amazing technical stuff and made millions of shows available on the electric internet machine. Thanks Viv, you're the best.

Sunday November 23rd

With a tear in my eye and a fondness in my heart I hung up my local and vocal headphones today for about three months, doing something a bit different over summer (tune in 5 pm Sundays for more info from December).

Heading to Queenscliff Music Festival next weekend so the spunky boys from Three Chords and the Truth will be filling in for me again next week before launching into their own season 1-3 Sundays.

This week a new website was launched, head to blacklist.org.au if you'd like any information about the fantastic breadth and depth of genres in Indigeonous music, from traditional, to folk, to hip hop. The site features artists such as Ruby Hunter, Archie Roach, Kev Carmody, Dave Arden, Tjimba and the Yung Warriors. There are more than one hundred pages in the works.

Blacklist.org.au is an initiative of Fraynework, a not-for-profit, multimedia and communications solutions provider established by the Sisters of Mercy based in Carlton.

Victorian Gunditjmara musician, Dave Arden, one of the architects of blacklist.org.au says
“For the first time we have the opportunity to express our culture through an indigenous music portal to the wider national and international audience,

“What I see blacklist.org.au doing is giving indigenous Australia a chance to showcase their art where it’s “hand-on” and we can maintain creative control.”

Ripper - Go check it out!
